Weekly MP3 #189: Colin Stetson - The Stars In His Head (Dark Lights Remix)

Roaring bass sax solo from the label that releases Stetson, Constellation Records. Stream below, head to the label page if you want to download. Call it a Christmas present from me to you, if you like.

It's probably worth noting this was recorded live in one take and is just Stetson and his monster sax. It's a remix only in the sense that the volumes and so on of the many microphones set up during the recording were mixed (by Aussie ex-pat / Icelandic resident Ben Frost). I guess the demented growling noises are him singing into his horn while playing it. Have heard people do it with a flute, never with a sax!
May as well see out the year with a track from one of the best things I discovered in 2011. This album was a real revelation. So good and so distinctive and so WHOA WHERE'S MY WORDS GOING.
He does get in Laurie Anderson to do vox on a few tracks. I do really like some of her old music, but... let's say her vocals were no kind of revelation to me. :P
Montreal resident Colin Stetson plays with a bunch of indie bands that I don't mind but don't really care about, e.g. Arcade Fire. Bon Iver, etc. He also played on a recent Tom Waits record, which seems a bit more inkeeping with the kind of sounds he produces solo.
