Nice NZ map of electricity use reveals a smelter outshines all cities
A friend linked me to a website called Grid Watch, which has a nice interactive map showing electricity consumption by region. The most striking thing about it is what another friend described as "an angry red pimple", the bright blip at the bottom of the South Island that outshines all other points on the map.
It's a lot brighter than any of the bunched up blips around Auckland, New Zealand's largest city, but I assumed that was just because bits of that city were split up and being counted separately. Digging in a bit on the map, you can find that, actually, no, even if you add up the total consumption for the region around Auckland it's lower than the consumption of Tiwai Point...
Could comment, but mostly just find the available facts interesting enough.
